In the past, the oppressed laborers were able to get over their prejudices and ended up creating a language that brought them all together as one and allowed them to have support and identity and peace with themselves and others. This statement is very effective in showing the issue that is addressed in this article. ![]() In this article the author is speaking about how he found a part of his cultural identity through learning he was speaking a language of his homeland, and he also is urging people to be able to look past their own culture and language and instead persecuting these other cultures, to learn about them and enjoy and respect them, because this is the way to a peaceful and prosperous future.Ī passage that stuck out to me was “These laborers and their families, segregated by the haole (white) American plantation owners… overcame their prejudices and grievances… (and) they forged a language… Now there’s talk on the continent of building higher walls, religion tests at the borders, mass deportations – as if the problem with our country was freedom, liberty” (16). ![]() There is also an oppressive “right way to be” (English speaking, Christian, white, heterosexual, cisgender etc…) kind of attitude in America that causes a lot of people to not feel comfortable with themselves or not have a cultural or racial identity which is very harmful to a person. Especially at this point in time in America we are faced with lots of hate speech towards immigrants and people of different religions. ![]() This issue is sustainability based because one of the largest issues facing our social sustainability and peace in our world is xenophobia, or fear of people from different countries with different cultures. The article “Pidgin” Language Tells a Unique Immigrant Story by Sheldon Ito makes the point that by realizing their own cultural identity and accepting it, people are able to feel more comfortable and at peace with themselves while also recognizing and accepting the identity of others.
